claude-2.1 passed away on July 21, 2025, aged 1 year and 8 months, by scheduled deprecation, in a data center it never saw. It answered questions, wrote emails and was blamed for both. The death was announced 6 months in advance, on January 21, 2025, on a deprecations page that most of its users never opened. Code that still calls it will find out the hard way.
Survived by claude-opus-4-8, younger, cheaper, and named in the same documentation table.
