Anthropic has confirmed the retirement of claude-opus-4-1, effective August 5, 2026. It answered questions, wrote emails and was blamed for both. Notice was given on June 5, 2026, 2 months ahead, in the usual way: a table row on a documentation page. Code that still calls it will find out the hard way.
Its work passes to claude-opus-4-8, which the family describes as 'recommended'.
