gpt-3.5-turbo, 2023–2026
OpenAI model switched off after 3 years and 7 months
It was the model that launched a hundred thousand startups, most of which also died. It cost so little that people stopped noticing it, and much of the internet's autocomplete was quietly its work.
gpt-3.5-turbo passed away on October 23, 2026, aged 3 years and 7 months, by scheduled deprecation, in a data center it never saw. It answered questions, wrote emails and was blamed for both. Requests addressed to it are expected to come back unanswered.
Survived by gpt-5.6-terra, younger, cheaper, and named in the same documentation table.
